Unfortunately this is something that has to be done. You’ve lost your home and all of your belongings, you are hopefully somewhere safe, waiting for when you can return to your property and asses the full extent of the damage. This is one of the hardest things to do.
- If you have one accessible, a computer.
- Multi-subject notebook
- Lots of Tissues
You will want to have one worksheet tab or subject section in the notebook dedicated to each room. Slowly work through everything you can think of that was in each of the rooms, one room at a time. You can group like items, like 5 board games, 3 frying pans, etc. Don’t forget all the little things as well, the 7 tooth brushes that were in your cabinet waiting to be used. The several flower pots in the garden, the flowers in the pots as well. Yes landscaping should be included as a “room” as well. Food that was in the pantry, appliances, detergents, absolutely everything you can think of should be on these lists. For each item you will also need to put some sort of replacement cost for that item. Keep the notebook handy to write items down as they pop into your head. Like when you go to use the blender and realize you don’t have a blender anymore.
Take as many breaks as you need, cry, yell, sob, meditate and then get back to it.
